The Stiftung Valendas Impuls (foundation Valendas Impuls) is behind the Gasthaus am Brunnen (Inn at the Fountain)

The creation of the foundation was initiated by the association «Valendas Impuls». Since its foundation on 4 September 2004, the latter has been involved in selected activities for a sustainable development of the small and financially weak Grisons mountain village Valendas, which is unique with its still intact historical appearance of the village and its attractive location in the heart of the Rheinschlucht (Rhine gorge) which is known as a nature, hiking, biking and canoe paradise.

On 20 November 2007, the foundation was constituted and started its work. It aims at maintaining and using the buildings and spaces worthy of protection and preservation in the mountain village Valendas (municipality Safiental) and thus at ensuring and increasing the cultural, social and economic welfare of Valendas and its population. It may also support cultural activities in the region in the interest of Valendas and its population. The foundation is a non-profit institution and does not intend to achieve gains.

The first project of the foundation aims– as a self-help project of the small Grisons mountain village Valendas – at reconstructing and reviving the so-called „Engihuus“ (Engi house), which is situated centrally at the historic at the Dorfplatz (village square) with Europe’s largest wooden fountain.

In 2009, the municipality donated the 500-year-old building to the foundation with the proviso that a village restaurant with a medium-sized town hall shall be set up and run therein. It shall be rebuilt and expanded to a meeting point for the population and for guests from near and far and shall replace the existing small inn on the opposite side which is not anymore furnished in a contemporary style.

The foundation intends to develop the Engihuus into a „meeting point“ for locals and guests with a pub, restaurant, hall and seven unique hotel rooms as well as a point of information for Valendas and the Rheinschlucht (Rhine gorge). As an appealing and regional Gasthaus (inn), it shall give an impulse for the regional development. Inter alia, this should be provided by:

  • Higher value added for the villagers
  • Protection and preservation of historic monuments
  • Promotion of the unique landscape

According to the plan, the foundation was formally founded in Chur on 21 June 2011. The registration in the commercial register was published on 29 June 2011 (Swiss Official Gazette of Commerce (SHAB) No. 124 p. 15).
